Colee's Comment

Colee commented on "Fashion Feature: Ruffled Skirts" asking how to get clothes for less money. I am on a budget for clothing too, because I usually pay for them myself (and I don't get an allowance). I usually shop at Charlotte Russe, an awesome store that has sales and inexpensive clothes all the time. I also shop at Rue 21, which has even more inexpensive clothes...they have $10, $8, and $3 sale racks! I've read about and seen online how cool Forever 21 is. My friend told me that she went to a Forever 21 and a whole floor was filled with $10 clothes. Sadly, we don't have one where i live :(. I also got some hand-me-downs from my cousin, like those blue shorts I'm wearing with the peasant blouse in the pictures. If you take time to look, thrift stores and second-hand stores have some finds too. I shop at Dillard's, Penney's, Wal-Mart... I'm always looking for sales and clearance items.
I hope this helped, Colee! Good luck at school!

Underneath

Under my brace I wear Jockey camisoles this these:

They're smooth and stretchy and don't wrinkle under the brace.
For underwear, I had to get lowrise panties because anything else would get stuck under the edges of my brace.

Accessories

I have fallen in LOVE with bowtie necklaces. But instead of buying one, I took a long chain and clipped a bow I had from elementary school onto it.

If you want to update or change your make-up look, Youtube panacea81 and check out Lauren Luke's amazing make-up tutorials! She has definately been my make-up inspiration.

Headbands draw attention to your face and also say "Hey, I tried this morning!", which comes in handy when you really didn't have time to try to make yourself look nice.

Fashion Feature: Ruffled Skirts

Fashion feature! Ruffled skirts are a real staple. I don't know the websites these are from, sorry! I just Googled!

Longer skirts are cute as well...they look good when you sit down because the extra fabric will hide your brace in the back.

This skirt is GORGEOUS! You could pair it with a slightly loose white shirt and a thin, light brown jacket.

I have a skirt like this pink one, but it's beige, from Dillard's. It has a wide, black waistband that makes your waist look good.

This loose skirt with ruffled skirt will draw attention to your waist and give you a nice shape.

Just Like Me

I recently went in to my doctor for a check-up for my back, and the nurse called me back before it was my turn. She told me that there was another girl there that had just gotten the news that she would have to wear a back brace, like me. They wanted me to show her my brace and tell her a little about my experience.
Well, when I entered the room, I saw a scared, crying, 12-year-old girl huddled between her parents. I took a deep breath, sat down, and introduced myself. As soon as I started talking, though, I was crying, too. Just seeing someone like me, who is going through what I have gone through, made me emotional. I told her that at first, scoliosis is the end of the world. I told her that because I know when I first got my brace, I did NOT want to have the "it could be worse, so be thankful" speech. In the beginning, scoliosis and back braces and curved spines and being different is the worst thing possible. Because you never thought it would be you. But as time goes on, it gets better. I told her that in all honesty, scoliosis is a blessing in disguise, and you do grow stronger because of it. Before I got my brace, I wore t-shirts and shorts everywhere I went. But after I started figuring out what I could and couldn't wear, I got really interested in fashion, make-up, etc., and now I'm considering a career in fashion. I told her it would be hard and frustrating, but that i knew she would be strong enough to get through it.
So, for all of you with scoliosis, make the most of it! Fight back! Do not let it get the best of you. Think of it as a competition: So scoliosis won't let you wear a certain outfit you really wanted? Bounce back with something better. I have recently become addicted to fashion blogs, and every time I see something I like, I copy it to a Word document to look at when I need inspiration. (The document is 25 pages long, and still growing...)
